General Andrew Jackson got the nickname of “Old Hickory” from his own soldiers on account of his tough, unyielding disposition. Shou-sugi-ban is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation that dates back to the 18th century. Wood is preserved by burning it black. The burning process creates a layer of carbon resulting in an elegant finish that protects wood from the elements. Yup, that's pretty damn cool.
